Announcing the successor to malmal

Lucas

Hi, this is Lucas, the creator of malmal. I've got some great news! About two years ago I connected with Tea, who has been working on bringing iScribble back. iScribble was a collaborative art site, a bit like malmal, that was online from 2006 to 2018, when it unfortunately had to shut down because it was built on adobe flash. We realized that we share our vision for how the best collaborative art site should look, so we started working on a successor that would combine the best of both iScribble and malmal!

While I am very happy with how malmal turned out there are lessons I have learned since that has made me want to rebuilt the site from the core. For example, with the way malmal is currently build architecturally, layers would be almost impossible to implement. I always wanted to start fresh and apply what I learnt from my mistakes when building malmal on a new platform: enter HelloPaint!

Over the last year I've been working on HelloPaint together with Tea. I am happy to announce that we now have a working beta version that we are extremely excited to share. To help fund the development and to limit the amount of users while we keep working on adding the important features to have a public collaborative drawing app, we're doing a kickstarter.

Everyone that backs the kickstarter will get access to the current beta version of HelloPaint as soon as we are funded successfully. This means you can start drawing on the new platform as soon as November of this year! Some new features already on the beta:

  • Canvas Objects: Canvases are basically a group of Layers floating on the infinite canvas, so you can add layers anywhere!
  • Circles Brush: A new kind of brush that has more texture and is great for blending! You might know it from iScribble.
  • Limited Canvases: If you get lost too easy on the infinite canvas we have an option to create a limited canvas, just like it was on iScribble.

Malmal will keep running until the official release and for some time after, so everyone has enough time to move there. We'll also very likely add some way to import your malmal boards to HelloPaint!
